why is it important to have healthy skin?
Our skin is the largest organ in our body. It is also the organ that comes into direct contact with the rest of the world. Our skin holds our body fluids in, preventing us, under normal conditions becoming dehydrated. In addition to keeping the good things in, it also keeps the bad things out. Without skin we would be very prone to infection. Many people are unaware that our skin is full of nerve endings that help us feel things like heat, cold, and pain. If we couldn’t feel these things, we could be badly hurt and not even know it.
It makes good sense to keep our skin as healthy as we can – after all, it plays such a big part in protecting our body. Healthy skin will help us keep from getting sick or having damage to bones, muscles, and internal organs.
Skin also helps to keep our body temperature even. If we get too hot, blood vessels near the surface of our skin (called capillaries), enlarge to let the warm blood cool down. Our skin also makes vitamin D when the sun shines on it. Vitamin D is important for the health of our bones and other parts of the body.
In coming weeks, we will look at how our skin can be injured and what we can do to prevent injury or what we need to do if injury occurs.
